Globus Upload and Download

Globus is a web-based system that provides a GUI that allows you to upload and download files to or from Beocat. It does not require DUO authentication but may require your K-State credentials for the first download. You can do these transfers using the globus.org website without any configuration, but these transfer over https which can be flaky for larger transfers. You can also set up your own endpoint on your local computer which provides more reliability and allows multi-file and directory tranfers, but at the moment this method does not work if you are on campus (we are working with Central IT to correct this).

Start by logging into Globus at https://globus.org. You will log in with your K-State credentials, so start typing Kansas State University in the box then use your K-State eID and password, plus you will be DUO authenticated.

Once you are logged in, click on the FILE MANAGER option on the left near the top. This is the area where you will be initiating all your file transfers. Next choose the Beocat endpoint by clicking in the Collection search box and typing beocat.

This should pop up the Beocat Filesystem and a brief technical description. Click on that to choose this as your primary endpoint for the transfers.

Next click in the Path search box and type in your home directory path then hit return and the Beocat files on your home directory will be displayed. You can use this Path box to navigate to any subdirectory you want, or you can navigate by clicking on the directories themselves.

To download a file from Beocat to your system, click on the file as in the green rectangle then click on the Download option.

You may need to go through the K-State authentication for the first download. This can be repeated as many times as you wish to download files from Beocat to your local system.

To upload a file to Beocat, start by clicking the Upload option as in the red rectangle then click the Select Files to Upload and choose your file or directory.

Setting up and using a local endpoint

If you plan on using Globus often, it can be more convenient to set up a local endpoint on your own system too. This allows you to see your files as well as those on Beocat, and transfer easily in either direction. It is also a more reliable connection for transferring large files, though again this currently doesn't work if you are on campus due to the ports being blocked.

Start by clicking on the 2-panel view highlighted in a red box as above, then click in the second Collections search box highlighted by the green rectangle.

At the bottom there will be a link Get Globus Connect Personnel. Follow these directions to download and install the Globus app for your computer system.

Once installed, you can set the path on your local system. Then you can transfer files in either direction. The example above shows choosing the file on my local system in the red rectangle, then clicking on the Start option.
